Minutes from the October 25th meeting

Present: Hank, Judith, Bob, Liane, Debbie Nichols, Kathy Buck

We are no longer meeting on third Tuesdays because there are too many conflicts. We’ll just set up the next meeting each time we meet, as an agenda item.

Liane will ask Spence how things are going with the composting facility project.

Hank investigated the waste to energy issue in Orange County. A long report was written by county officials in August 2008.

Hank will post a link to the PDF. For the time being, the possibility of doing this seems remote. Currently it is more expensive to convert to energy ($60-70 a ton) than to dump ($30-40 a ton). Political agreement is very unlikely over how to do this and where. There would be economic/political objections from the corporate waste hauler.
We decided not to spend any more time on the issue.

Bob is continuing to work on a tri-fold one page document to use for approaching faith groups. He will send it to Liane for final formatting in Word. TCCH will cover printing costs. We will do the easy ones first. Bob’s church, Hank’s church, then Kathy Shea’s church. Possible Church of Reconciliation, etc. Churches all seem to already have environmental committees and agendas. We may need to search for less receptive churches.

But there is a meeting of “outreach ministers” which takes place occasionally. At this meeting, and at a Orange Justice group meeting, it is possible to find out the contact people for many if not most local churches. Bob will talk to his church rep about this and we can move on to forming alliances with church members.
Hank’s church already chooses different things to swap and recycle each month in his church. VCRs, styrofoam, used meds, etc. This is a great program we could suggest to other groups!

Judith hasn’t moved forward on the Food Lion plastic bag issue, but is hoping to do so soon.
